Belmonte Castle Tour
5th and 6th graders enjoy a history lesson day visiting a medieval castle.
Our students became 15th century knights for a day in their visit to the castle of Belmonte. There, the feudal lord Don Juan Pacheco (first Marquess of Villena) and Juana La Beltraneja welcomed us to explain the medieval way of life.
After visiting all the rooms of the castle, including the dungeons, our students had the opportunity to have a great time with interesting activities the castle lords had prepared for us: swordplay , archery, fencing as well as complicated battles where they had to keep the balance …
Later, after a hard workout , they stopped to lunch and regain strength.
Built in the fifteenth century by the powerful Marqués de Villena, Belmonte is currently one of the best preserved medieval castles in Spain after major restoration carried out by the owners, the Duchy of Peñaranda and Montijo. Located in the province of Cuenca origin of the oldest lineages Castilian and 150 km from Madrid.
The Castle has been the scene of important historical spanish events such as battles for the crown of Castile, hosting of the Catholic Kings, or the birth of the Renaissance poet Fray Luis de León. It was also the main stage of the filming of “El Cid” starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren.
It was definitely a memorable day in which the students enjoyed and learnt together with their teachers.
